What is arthritis?
Arthritis simply means pain and inflammation in a joint, causing stiffness and sometimes swelling. It most often affects the knees, hips and hands. There are two broad types, and telling them apart matters because they are treated differently:
- Osteoarthritis — the common wear-and-tear type, usually with age, often in the knees and hips.
- Inflammatory arthritis — driven by the immune system, often affecting several joints with longer morning stiffness.
What does arthritis feel like?
Common signs include joint pain that is worse with use, stiffness (especially in the morning), swelling, and sometimes a grinding sensation or reduced movement. If your daily activities — walking, stairs, prayer, housework — are becoming harder, it is worth getting the joint properly assessed rather than living on painkillers.
Can arthritis be treated without surgery?
For most people, yes. A large part of orthopaedic care for arthritis is non-surgical. With the right combination of medicines, weight management, targeted exercises, lifestyle adjustments and sometimes injections, many patients stay active and comfortable for years. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ali will explain your stage in plain words and start with a clear non-surgical plan.
When is joint replacement really needed?
Joint replacement is usually considered only when arthritis is advanced and non-surgical treatment is no longer controlling your pain or letting you live normally. Some patients are advised to have surgery earlier than they truly need it — which is exactly why an independent second opinion is worthwhile. Dr. Ahmed will look at your films himself and give you an honest answer.

What exactly is arthritis?
Arthritis is wear or inflammation in a joint that causes pain, stiffness and sometimes swelling — most commonly in the knees, hips and hands. Osteoarthritis is the wear-and-tear type; inflammatory arthritis is driven by the immune system. Knowing which type you have matters, because the treatment is different.
Can arthritis be treated without surgery?
Yes — for most patients, arthritis is managed for years without surgery using the right medicines, weight management, exercises, lifestyle changes and sometimes injections. Dr. Ahmed will give you a clear non-surgical plan first.
When is a joint replacement actually needed?
Usually only when arthritis is advanced and non-surgical treatment is no longer controlling the pain. Many people are advised to operate earlier than they need to, which is why a second opinion is valuable.
Can arthritis be assessed online?
Yes. Arthritis is assessed largely from your symptoms, how your joints move, and any X-rays you have — all of which work well on video. Dr. Ahmed will review your history and reports and give you a plan.
How much does an arthritis consultation cost?
Rs 5,000 per session — including the video consultation, review of your X-rays or reports, a diagnosis and treatment plan, and a prescription where appropriate.
