What is rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition — the body's own immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, causing pain, swelling and stiffness. This is very different from the common wear-and-tear osteoarthritis, and it is treated differently, which is why getting the right diagnosis early is so important.

How is it different from ordinary arthritis?

Why early treatment matters

The most important message with RA is this: the earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the better. Left untreated, the inflammation can gradually damage the joints — but with the right medicines, monitoring and exercise, most people get it under good control and protect their joints for the long term.

Get seen promptly if: a joint suddenly becomes very hot, swollen and painful with a fever — this can be a joint infection and needs urgent in-person care rather than an online appointment.

How an online consultation helps

RA is assessed from your symptoms, how your joints look and move, and blood tests such as RA factor and Anti-CCP. In your consultation, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ali will review your history and any reports, advise on the right tests, start you on the correct path, and arrange specialist rheumatology input where it is needed — so you are not left guessing while the condition progresses.

Rheumatoid arthritis — common questions

What's the difference between rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is wear-and-tear, usually with age, often in one or a few joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is autoimmune — the immune system attacks the joints, typically causing pain, swelling and long morning stiffness in several joints at once, often the hands symmetrically. They are treated very differently.

What are the early signs?

Pain and swelling in the small joints of the hands and feet, often on both sides, morning stiffness lasting more than 30–60 minutes, and tiredness. Early treatment protects the joints, so it is worth getting assessed rather than waiting.

Can it be assessed online?

Yes. RA is assessed from your symptoms, how your joints look and move, and blood tests (RA factor, Anti-CCP). Dr. Ahmed will review your history and reports, advise on tests, and guide treatment — with rheumatology referral where needed.

Can rheumatoid arthritis be controlled?

Yes. With early diagnosis and the right medicines, exercise and monitoring, RA can usually be brought under good control, reducing pain and protecting the joints. The earlier it is treated, the better.

How much does a consultation cost?

Rs 5,000 per session — including the video consultation, review of any tests or reports, a clear plan, and a prescription where appropriate.
