What causes shoulder pain?
The shoulder is a very mobile joint, and pain can come from several different structures. The common causes include:
- Frozen shoulder — a painful, progressively stiff shoulder, common in adults and often in people with diabetes.
- Rotator-cuff and tendon problems — pain when lifting the arm, sometimes after overuse.
- Impingement — pinching of tendons causing pain in certain positions.
- Shoulder arthritis or stiffness after an injury or dislocation.
What is a frozen shoulder — and does it get better?
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) makes the shoulder painful and progressively stiff, so it becomes hard to raise or rotate the arm — reaching behind your back or overhead can become very difficult. It usually develops gradually and can last many months, which is frustrating. The reassuring news is that the great majority of cases recover with the right exercises, physiotherapy and sometimes an injection. Surgery is rarely needed.
How an online consultation helps
Shoulder problems are assessed largely from your history and by watching how the shoulder moves — which works well on a video call. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ali will confirm what is causing your pain, guide you through the specific exercises and treatment that work for your condition, and tell you whether any scan or injection is genuinely needed. You leave with a clear plan and realistic expectations for recovery.
