What is gout?
Gout is a form of arthritis caused by too much uric acid in the blood. The uric acid forms tiny, sharp crystals inside a joint, which trigger a sudden and intensely painful attack. It most often strikes the big toe, but the ankle, knee, foot and other joints can be affected too. It is common in Pakistan, and very manageable with the right approach.
What a gout attack feels like
A classic attack comes on suddenly — often in the middle of the night — with:
- Severe pain in the joint, frequently the big toe.
- Redness, warmth and swelling.
- Such tenderness that even a bedsheet feels unbearable.
Attacks settle over a few days, but they tend to keep coming back — and can slowly damage the joint — if the underlying uric acid is not brought under control.
How an online consultation helps
Gout is diagnosed from the pattern of your attacks and simple blood tests, which works well online. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ali will confirm the diagnosis, help you settle the current attack, and — most importantly — give you a plan to lower your uric acid and prevent future attacks, using the right medicines, diet and lifestyle changes. Controlling gout properly protects your joints for the long term.
Diet matters — but it's only part of it
Common triggers include red and organ meats, certain seafood, alcohol, sugary drinks and dehydration. Cutting these back helps, but many people also need medicine to keep uric acid low. The right balance is different for each person — which is exactly what a proper consultation sorts out, instead of generic advice.
