Home › Blog › How long does a fracture take to heal?
It is the first question almost every patient asks after a break: "how long until I'm back to normal?" The honest answer is that it depends — on which bone, and on you. But there are realistic timelines, and one important thing most people get wrong.
A rough guide by bone
As a general rule, many adult fractures heal enough in about 6 to 8 weeks — but it genuinely varies. Small bones tend to heal faster; large weight-bearing bones take longer. Children heal faster than adults. These are approximate ranges, not promises:
| Area | Rough healing time |
|---|---|
| Finger / toe | 3–6 weeks |
| Wrist / hand | 4–8 weeks |
| Ankle / foot | 6–8 weeks |
| Arm (forearm) | 6–10 weeks |
| Leg (tibia / thigh) | 3–6 months |
Your own fracture may be quicker or slower depending on the exact break and how it is treated.
The thing most people get wrong
Here is the key point: bone healing and full recovery are not the same thing. Your X-ray may show the bone has joined, but the muscles and joints around it have been resting for weeks and are stiff and weak. So it is completely normal to still have aching, stiffness and reduced strength after the bone has technically healed — full recovery, with rehabilitation, often takes a good while longer than healing itself.
What can slow healing down
- Smoking — one of the biggest slowers of bone healing.
- Poor nutrition, or low vitamin D and calcium.
- Diabetes, older age, or certain medicines.
- A fracture in an area with a naturally poor blood supply.
- Not protecting or resting the fracture as advised.
Not sure your fracture is healing normally?
If you have an X-ray and you are unsure whether things are on track — or your fracture healed months ago but still hurts — I can review it in an online consultation, explain where you are in the timeline, and tell you whether it is settling normally or needs a closer look.

How long does a broken bone take to heal?
Roughly 6–8 weeks for many adult fractures, but it varies a lot by bone and person. Small bones may heal in a few weeks; a leg bone can take months. Children heal faster.
Why does my fracture still hurt after it has healed?
Bone healing and full recovery are different. Even after the bone joins, the surrounding muscles and joints need time to recover from being immobilised. Lingering pain can also be from hardware or a slow-healing area, worth reviewing.
What makes a fracture heal slower?
Smoking, poor nutrition, diabetes, some medicines, older age, poor blood supply, and not resting the fracture properly. Good nutrition and following your plan help.
