Home › Blog › Is it normal for knees to crack?
Almost everyone's knees click, pop or crack at some point — going up stairs, standing after sitting, or squatting down. It is one of the most common things patients worry about. The good news: most of the time, it is completely harmless. Here is the simple way to tell.
Why do knees make noise?
Painless knee noise — doctors call it "crepitus" — usually comes from one of two harmless things: tiny gas bubbles releasing inside the joint fluid (the same reason knuckles crack), or a tendon or soft tissue gently gliding over the bony parts of the knee as it bends. Neither of these damages the joint, and neither means your knees are "wearing out."
The simple rule: sound alone is fine
If your knee cracks but there is no pain, no swelling and no other problem, you almost certainly do not need to worry about it or treat it. Noisy joints are extremely common in perfectly healthy knees, at every age. The sound by itself is not a sign of arthritis or damage.
When knee sounds are worth checking
It becomes worth getting assessed when the cracking comes together with other symptoms:
- Pain when the knee clicks or grinds.
- Swelling around the joint.
- Locking or catching — the knee gets briefly stuck and you have to wiggle it free. This can point to a meniscus (cartilage) problem.
- Giving way — a feeling that the knee will buckle under you, which can suggest a ligament issue.
In short: sound is not the problem — sound plus pain, swelling, locking or instability is. That combination is worth a proper look.
What a consultation actually does
If your knee noise comes with any of those warning signs, an orthopaedic assessment sorts out the cause quickly. In an online consultation I will ask how and when the noise happens, watch how your knee bends and takes weight, review any X-rays you have, and tell you plainly whether it is harmless or needs anything further — so you stop worrying about a sound that, in most people, means nothing at all.

Is it bad if my knees crack when I squat or climb stairs?
If it is painless, it is almost always harmless — usually gas bubbles releasing or soft tissues moving over the joint. It does not mean your knees are wearing out. It only needs attention when it comes with pain, swelling, or the knee locking or giving way.
Does knee cracking mean I have arthritis?
Not on its own. Many healthy knees are noisy. Arthritis is suggested by cracking combined with pain, stiffness and swelling — not by the sound alone.
When should I see a doctor about knee noises?
If the cracking comes with pain, swelling, locking or catching, or a feeling the knee will give way. Locking in particular can point to a cartilage problem. Painless clicking with no other symptoms needs no treatment.
